

The twelve o’clock whistles were blowing just as the sloop shot ahead under full sail. “I had resolved on a voyage around the world, and as the wind on the morning of Apwas fair, at noon I weighed anchor, set sail, and filled away from Boston, where the Spray had been moored snugly all winter. In his famous book, Sailing Alone Around the World, now considered a classic of travel literature, he described his departure in the following manner: On April 24, 1895, at the age of 51, he departed Boston in his tiny sloop Spray , a 36′ 9″ gaff rigged sloop oyster boat, and sailed around the world single-handed. Captain Joshua Slocum, a native of Novia Scotia, completed the feat on June 27th, 1898.
